چکیده

Accepted 13 May 2009 Copyright © EEF ISSN 1399-1183 Mediterranean savannas are landscapes with a continuous herbaceous cover and scattered trees. Savannas are usually intermingled with patches of woodland, shrub-land, treeless grasslands, and crop-lands forming a complex mosaic. Heterogeneity in topography, soil and climate, interactions among species, and the superimposed selective activity of wild and domestic herbivores, in addition to human activities such as clearing, ploughing and burning are main agents forging this type of landscape. Oaks are the dominant trees in the wooded pastures (called dehesas or montados) of the Iberian Peninsula (west Mediterranean Basin) and in the savannas of California (northwest America). However trees and shrubs belonging to many taxonomic groups may form savannalike systems in other regions with Mediterranean climate. These include Juniperus sp. and Retama sphaerocarpa in Spain, Pistacia atlantica and Ceratonia siliqua in north Africa, Acacia caven in Chile, other Acacia species in central Africa, Protea nitida in south Africa and Eucalyptus sp. in Australia. Interactions between the two contrasting life-forms, trees and herbs, in savannas may be synergistic or antagoReview

The changing role of fire in mediating the relationships among oaks, grasslands, mesic temperate forests, and boreal forests in the Lake States

Historically, oak forests and woodlands intergraded with southern boreal forest, temperate mesic forest, and grassland biomes, forming complex fire-mediated relationships in the Great Lakes region of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, USA. Variability in fire recurrence intervals allowed oaks to mix with grasses or with mesic forest species in areas with high (2–10 yr) or moderate (several dec...

Explanatory ecological factors for the persistence of desiccation-sensitive seeds in transient soil seed banks: Quercus ilex as a case study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Dominant tree species in northern temperate forests, for example oak and beech, produce desiccation-sensitive seeds. Despite the potentially major influence of this functional trait on the regeneration and distribution of species under climate change, little is currently known about the ecological determinants of the persistence of desiccation-sensitive seeds in transient so...

The Geographic Distribution of a Tropical Montane Bird Is Limited by a Tree: Acorn Woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) and Colombian Oaks (Quercus humboldtii) in the Northern Andes

Species distributions are limited by a complex array of abiotic and biotic factors. In general, abiotic (climatic) factors are thought to explain species' broad geographic distributions, while biotic factors regulate species' abundance patterns at local scales. We used species distribution models to test the hypothesis that a biotic interaction with a tree, the Colombian oak (Quercus humboldtii...

A Comparison of Management Strategies in the Oak Woodlands of Spain and California

The characteristics, uses, and management of oak woodlands and savannas in California and southern Spain are compared. There are many similarities between the Spanish dehesa and the California oak woodland. Both are located in Mediterranean climate zones, and are used predominantly for livestock grazing. However the Spanish dehesa is a more diverse and long-standing system of management. Produc...
